Belfast calling

The announcement that Glenn Hughes is playing in Belfast in October (dates at deep-purple.net) makes this a bumper year for fans in Northern Ireland with Purple there at the end of June.

Aodán Cunningham, who says he is looking forward to all the gigs, tells us he recalls a certain Mr Gillan saying at his last appearance in Belfast that he would definitely be back “very soon”. That was back in 1978!
They played in the Students Union at Queens. It was the Gillan, Byrd, Towns, McCoy and Barnacle line up. “I was 14 and this was my first year for gigs. Earlier that year I saw Thin Lizzy and Horslips, both at the Ulster Hall.”
This line-up didn’t last very long, me and Ann saw them at a similar sort of venue over in Salford University, and it was a corking concert (if sparsely attended). I managed to take a few snaps too before one of the student jobsworths decided to try and confiscate our camera!
