Darker Than Blue NEWS ROUND-UP SEVEN September 2011

Starting to get the hang of the DTB online newsletters, it’s taking me a while to get a system sorted out to keep track of everything. We also managed to have a week away at the start of September which has delayed it, though as the BBC Sessions CD/LP was delivered to EMI the week before, I made sure I took back-ups and the laptop with me in case there were amendments needed (which there were, albeit mostly arguments about the size and position of the BBC logo). I seem to have lost the credit for the above photo too, please drop me an email and I will update. Great shot!

deep purple montreux 2011 dvdDEEP PURPLE CURRENT • Deep Purple are issuing what is becoming a regular series of Montreux DVDs again this year. Their 2011 slot with the Orchestra is scheduled for release in November to link in with the European shows. The set list runs as follows: Highway Star / Hard Loving Man / Maybe I’m A Leo / Strange Kind Of Woman / Rapture Of The Deep / Woman From Tokyo / Contact Lost / When A Blind Man Cries / The Well Dressed Guitar / Knocking At Your Back Door / Lazy / No One Came / Don Airey Solo / Perfect Strangers / Space Truckin’ / Smoke On The Water / Hush / Black Night.
It can be pre-ordered at DTBOnline Store. There are some five songs which were not performed on the 2006 set plus of course the Orchestral aspect. Formats are DVD and Blue-ray (both with bonus interviews) and a 2CD. The latest edition of Classic Rock has some quotes from the group, who sadly sound like they’re auditioning for one of those “Grumpy Old…” TV shows. Though as always it’s hard to tell the context.
It has also been announced (well not announced, the name just sneaked onto the latest adverts where eagle eyed DTB readers saw it) that Cheap Trick will support DPs UK tour later this year. Kind of not selling it to me guys!
Talking of tours, a just announced 16 date run in South America during October is their second longest trip there ever, though some wonder if doing four nights back to back is wise.

DEEP PURPLE ARCHIVE • PURPENDICULAR. Deep Purple’s 1996 album Perpendicular is now out on vinyl. Widely regarded as one of the best reunion albums, this is also one of the few Deep Purple albums never to have been available in this format before, and has been much requested. As a bonus the reissue adds the non-album bonus track Don’t Hold Your Breath (from the US and Japanese CD – a very popular move at the time!). DTB have shipped a fair few copies already. I have to say the pressing is great but the packaging a little skimpy: single sleeve, plain bags and just an insert with the CD notes on.

T-SHIRTS. Couple of new t-shirt designs been added to DTBOnline store recently. The first is a plain In Rock design on a pale blue shirt. The other is a tie-in for the Phoenix Rising release, which has the fire design off the front, and some gig dates on the back (for some reason), all in a sort of aged ‘vintage’ look (I had to point this out to Ann as she was all set to return them as faulty!).

BBC SESSIONS. The artwork for the upcoming BBC Sessions release is now on the blog as a PDF slide-show. DTBOnline store are now taking pre-orders for this. Please note that the vinyl box is limited and we expect it to sell out quite quickly. Despite the price. As I type The BBC Sessions 68/70 Set is scheduled for very end of October, so will probably ship first week of November. EMI are also doing an exclusive competition with us to give away a couple of the very rare white labels test pressings and finished box. More details here shortly. In the meantime we have updates and info on the set on the blog.

NEW LIVE & RARE is at last back on the Purple Records catalogue, and in the revised jewel case series, with a new booklet. The vinyl version is running a bit late but now expected at the end of September or early October.

Purple Records are also preparing a luxury vinyl edition of Sarabande, which we’re told will have a foil blocked cover, diecut centre, and special brown card outer sleeve. More anon.

PHOENIX NIGHTS US. The US edition of Phoenix Nights is basically as Europe, except for some minor design tweaks. The CD is a little different as they’ve run the tracks as separate pieces, whereas on the Europe edition they crossfaded them to make it sound like one complete show. Daniel Falaschi has checked out the US edition of the DVD and confirmed it to be Region 0 coded, so safe for all NTSC players.

black country communion live over europe DVDGLENN HUGHES • BCC : While the BBC pisses around reshowing dull sets from this year’s Glastonbury, Sky Arts have aired a special from this year’s High Voltage Festival. The 90-minute TV special includes footage of Black Country Communion. If they filmed the whole set, it’s not impossible the rest might get aired or perhaps used on the band’s upcoming DVD. I haven’t got access to the channel but assume they are no less keen on repeats than other channels if you miss this screening.
Meanwhile Black Country Communion Live Over Europe DVD / Bluray is also scheduled for the end of October, shot on no fewer than 14 cameras apparently.
Glenn has also announced some late November UK shows, and dates are on the DPAS web site.

WHITESNAKE : Have also dropped in three surprise pre-Xmas UK dates on sale, London Forum December 5, Newport Centre 7, Wolverhampton Civic 8. Meanwhile Bernie Marsden has talked about playing with the band again recently, you can read some of his comments on this site.

BLACKMORE : Not to be left out, Blackmore has announced UK dates during early October. These will be posted at deep-purple.net. Which means you can see six of the eight original members of DP within just a few weeks. Ritchie’s missus has her first solo CD out shortly too. They’re being coy about whether hubbie appears on it or not.

On the old ex-members scene, Ex Rainbow Doogie White releases a new solo album in October called ‘As Yet Untitled’, and features guest appearances from Tony Carey and Neil Murray amongst others (including the less famous members of Glenn’s solo band and Black Country Communion!). It’s available to pre-order at DTBOnline Store.
Neil is also (along with Don Airey) working on a charity single to aid the Japanese Red Cross, a cover of the Beatles’ Help. It’ll be out later in the year. Search the phrase “Help For JAPAN” on the web for info (they’ve a Facebook site too).

We have a couple of reviews of Don Airey’s recent solo album on the blog.

Lastly Demon’s Eye featuring DOOGIE WHITE doesn’t have Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar, the Guy is called Mark Zy. The PR sheet listed a load of bands in heavy type, and fooled me (the error was on our Catalogue Update mail-out).

Thanks to Tito Cantafio. Nigel Young. Stuart A Hamilton. Noble PR. Tim Summers. David Browne. Christian Meyer zu Natrup. And to Paul Cropper who couldn’t resist sending us this snap of one of those ‘decorate a pot’ shops which seem to be springing up everywhere – though not many seem to be Deep Purple fans like this mob…

  1. Nigel Young Says:

The Demon’s Eye (and occasionally Jon Lord’s) guitarist is Mark Zyk (not Mark Zy).

  2. purplepriest1965 Says:

I get the unpleasant idea a new DTB magazine will never reach my house again

  3. Purple Says:

Thanks for the news. However it is Purpendicular, not Perpendicular.
