Jon Lord photo book details released

[UPDATES] A number of copies will be auctioned during the evening of the memorial show. The Concerto DVD was filmed at Bucharest, November 5th 2009. The second half of the concert was released by mail order through his fan club, and was filmed by local TV.

As more than a few of you know (judging by my in-tray this morning!) the details of the forthcoming Jon Lord Photo Book are out, published by Rufus Stone (who did the well regarded California Jam book last year).
This new book has been produced with the full co-operation of many members of Jon Lord’s family, his brother setting the tone with an article and pictures about Jon’s early pre-Purple career. Many more friends and family have penned pieces, and from Deep Purple themselves there are moving words from Ian Paice, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Ritchie Blackmore.
The photographic content is largely unseen material. I was lucky enough to be shown some of the early submissions from his family and frankly you’d have to be a hard hearted person not to be moved by some of the touching family photographs. There are plenty of top live shots, as well as some great semi-professional but perhaps even more fascinating and atmospheric snaps from fellow musicians, crew, etc. taken on the road (the spread in the promo shot shows some of these). It covers Jon’s entire career from The Artwoods on to his later post-Purple projects.
As well as a 220 page large format hand-bound hard-back book, the typically high quality RS package (which is strictly limited to 500 copies) includes unreleased video and audio material, in the form of a DVD of a previously unseen performance The Concerto filmed in 2009, and two unreleased tracks from his personal collection pressed as a very collectable ten inch vinyl disc (and on a memory stick for those people who don’t have a record deck!).
Remembering his old mate, Rick Wakeman has personally signed each copy. Unlike some RS titles, there will apparently be no other printed editions. As with all things this book comes at a price; £275. You can get a discount by ordering ahead of the official release date in April. The book will be launched officially at the memorial concert on April 4th but NOT available to buy there.
As someone put it to me today, the book isn’t cheap, but it’s still less than it’s going to cost to get to the show, and it will last for a lifetime.
