Lentil stew

April 29, 2022

David Coverdale has become the first Deep Purple musician to sell his catalogue for a mess of pottage.  The sale hasn’t attracted as much media attention as many of the bigger rock names to have already done so (your Springsteens, Dylans and Bowies) but while some criticise musicians for doing these deals, in reality it does make a lot of sense as they reach the ends of their careers.  As far as I understand it, and deals may differ, in essence it means that for an immediate payout the new owners receive all the royalties in future rather than the artist.  DC has not made the amount known which suggests the sale didn’t quite attract the sums his peers managed but it will still have value particularly in America.  It seems to form part of DC’s wrapping up of business affairs what with his next UK tour (seven dates in May) being labelled a farewell.  He seems to imply he will be involved in future promotion of the back catalogue, although how many more Whitesnake Best Ofs the market will sustain I’m not sure! One suspects DP themselves will not be far behind in doing a similar sort of deal.  Thanks to Tim Summers.

Whitesnake are also the subject of a new TV documentary from Reelz TV in America: Whitesnake: Story of Their Songs, on Saturday, (February 19 at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT). “Spawned from the mind of former Deep Purple frontman David Coverdale the British rock band Whitesnake first appeared on the English music scene in 1978 and would soon achieve global stardom…”  The programme covers six of the band’s biggest hits and includes new interviews with Bernie Marsden and Neil Murray, Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai, as well as Joe Bonamassa and the band’s video director. No news thus far of a European airing but these sort of shows are usually quickly sold on.  Thanks to Tom Dixon.

Look luv, can you get your seat belt on, only if they pull me over I’ll get fined…

Family tree

December 14, 2021

While the Purple album has been occupying our thoughts, there has been quite a lot going on in the Whitesnake family tree lately. Bernie Marsden has his second album of blues covers out, this time targeting the Chess label. His last one, Kings, was well received so if it’s as well played as that it’ll be worth checking it out. You can get it as a signed copy with guitar pick on his website. Bernie was doing an intro to a book of vintage blues photos Simon is putting together too.
Meantime, the best Whitesnake rhythm section has reunited (Bomber / Cozy fans look away), with Neil Murray AND Ian Paice teaming up to tour with the covers band Purpendicular on some dates in Europe recently. Paice has played with them quite a lot in the past but this is the first time the pair have done so I believe. Be something to see / hear / feel.
This would also be a good place to mention Whitesnake themselves, or himself, who have recruited Irish bassist Tanya O’Callaghan to replace the departing Michael Devin. Tanya will cover live and studio duties according to the press release. Will some of the dodgier lyrics have to go? We’ll see.
Is there a sheet of paper long enough to cope with the Whitesnake family tree any more we wonder?! Yes, see below! Courtesy of Mark Maddock who works for a paper producer in darkest Finland. Just scribble Pete Frame’s address on and ship it over (though given the current paper shortages in Europe make sure you disguise the contents or it’ll be nicked). Thanks also to Tom Dixon.

DC and GH

April 22, 2020

Whitesnake have announced another set of reissues, we can do no better than to quote the publicity blurb: “(They) bring together some of their hardest-hitting songs of (their) multi-platinum career on The Rock Album, a new collection that features revisited, remixed and remastered versions of the group’s best rock songs. The album is the first release in the band’s “Red, White and Blues Trilogy,” a series of fresh, new collections organized by musical themes that will include: Love Songs (red), The Rock Album (white) and The Blues Album (blue). Pre-order ‘The Rock Album’ now on White Double Vinyl, CD and …” box set.
If Guinness Book of Records have a category for most recycled rock back catalogue then nominations are now closed. We are told that the “revisiting” includes new Hammond overdubs (on post-JL material) as well…

Glenn Hughes‘ first full track off the now delayed Dead Daisies album has been trailed on an animated YouTube vid – takes us back to those Old Great Whistle Test fillers! Great singing but not sure it has enough of a musical identity (or the visual theme is particularly appropriate at this time), although as with Purple you wouldn’t give away your best cut online! Talking of which, they’re promising another album teaser very shortly…

Thanks to Martin Ashberry and Tom Dixon

Over The Dene

February 20, 2020

Overdene-Maternity-Hospital-1979.jpg

Those with long memories may recall the photographs in the original Whitesnake Biography of various sites in Saltburn-by-the-Sea where David Coverdale was born and grew up. Overdene Maternity Hospital in Saltburn is where David gave the world his first rock and roll screams.  It was closed as a hospital in 1980 (not without a certain amount of opposition locally) and finally sold off by the NHS three years later. The building was then split into two spacious private homes, with new flats built in parts of the grounds – but we didn’t realise that the place was renamed Coverdale House! According to the local paper the building’s other claim to fame is that it was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the Victorian architect who designed London’s Natural History Museum. So two heritage plaques then?

David does like to saunter about whenever he is in the area with Whitesnake, and posted this rather nice shot of him taken outside the pub which his parents used to run, called The Red Lodge.

Whitesnake’s big package (tour)

November 7, 2019

whitesnake.jpg

David Coverdale and whoever is in Whitesnake right now (I’m a bit out of touch) are coming over on a stadium visit to Britain May / June 2020.  They will be in the company of fellow rock and roll titans (© Manchester Evenings News!) Foreigner and (openers) Europe to form a triple bill likely to strike a spot with fans of 1980s hits and MTV.  There are six dates in all. They then fly over to Australia for a tour there with The Scorpions, including a show in New Zealand, then a date in Singapore on the way across to Japan for half a dozen headlining shows.

Tickets are fully on sale this Friday but there are pre-sale offers on meet and greet packages if you look online (they START at £129.00!). Details : London’s O2 Arena (May 31), Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena (June 1), Arena Birmingham (June 3), Glasgow SSE Hydro (June 4) and Newcastle Utilita Arena (June 6), Manchester Arena on June 8.

The question we ask ourselves (apart from where I would hide for the other two acts!) is will they be a patch on the shows in 1979 and 1980 and the answer sadly is not, so I’ll put the money towards a trip to London to see the Bridget Riley exhibition instead.

Six-pack Whitesnake

August 27, 2019

The previous immersive Whitesnake sets must have worked out as DC has authorised another six pack special, this time for 1989’s Slip Of The Tongue album.  I must confess it’s not an album I remember playing much, it didn’t really live up to the 1987 one in terms of sheer wallop for me, but the singles mostly went US top thirty and it reached number ten in the US album charts, no mean feat at the time (it went platinum the following year).

slip-of-the-tongue-whitesnake 1990.jpg

Anyway as before, the album is remastered again, plus extras which include demos, monitor mixes, a Phil Easton promo interview disc, extended 12″ versions, b-sides, a whole CD of bits and bobs taken off the multi-tracks, a live set from Castle Donington 1990 (that’s the touring line-up below) and a DVD round up of the promo videos. So if this is your cup of tea then full marks indeed.  The Americans are even offering a special version with a signed lithograph.

Right that’s the news in brief, here’s the full monty American press details from Rhino, courtesy Tom Dixon, who is buying it he says!  I won’t insult anyone by showing their press pack photo as it’s so obviously faked up the North Koreans will be offering them a job.  Deep breath…..

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on October 4 for $74.98. The 6CD/DVD collection includes a newly remastered version of the album, plus unreleased studio recordings, audio and video of the band’s performance at the 1990 Monsters of Rock festival, and a new interview with Whitesnake founder and lead singer, David Coverdale. It comes in a 60-page hardbound book filled with rare memorabilia from the era.  For a limited time Rhino will offer the Super Deluxe edition paired with a lithograph signed by David Coverdale for $84.98.

Other versions of Slip of the Tongue will also be available the same day, including double-CD Deluxe Edition, which includes the newly remastered album expanded with a selection of rare and unreleased bonus tracks ($24.98) and a double-LP Deluxe Edition, which features the newly remastered album along with a selection of unique bonus tracks ($31.98).  A single-disc version ($9.98) includes the newly remastered album, along with single B-Sides plus alternate recordings. The music will be available digitally as well.

Following the 8x platinum success of their eponymous album in 1987, Whitesnake returned two years later with Slip of the Tongue. At the time, the band included Coverdale, bassist Rudy Sarzo, drummer Tommy Aldridge, and guitarists Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai. Vandenberg and Coverdale co-wrote all but one song on the album, but Vandenberg couldn’t record them in the studio at the time due to a hand injury. To fill the void, Vai joined the band for the album and tour.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION features unreleased versions of every album track, as well as monitor mixes for the album recorded in 1989. In addition, the collection includes nearly two dozen previously unreleased tracks taken from the session tapes that highlight working versions of album tracks and more. The set also includes the CD debut of Slip of the Tongue: The Wagging Tongue Edition. Released exclusively on vinyl in 1989, it features Coverdale being interviewed about each track followed by the song.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION finishes big with Whitesnake’s 1990 headlining performance at the Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington on CD and DVD. The DVD also includes three music videos, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. A new promo video for the track “Sweet Lady Luck”, made exclusively for this set, a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, plus a newly recorded interview with Coverdale and Vandenberg rounds out the DVD.

The ultimate Whitesnake collectable?  One of the classic rock sites has reported David Coverdale’s Incline Village home up for sale for a few dollars short of $10,000,000.  Sale is being handled by Chase International (motto “If you need to ask the price you cannot afford it”), but when I went to check their website out today the property had already disappeared, so someone may have already have snapped it up.  However the photos are still up at

https://ultimateclassicrock.com/whitesnake-david-coverdale-home-sale/

so it’s well worth a look as what I would suggests is the swizziest property ever owned by any of the Purple guys!  Certainly the view over Lake Tahoe is astonishing; how he ever managed to drag himself away from that to go on tour I don’t know.  Or where he found time to go out and shoot all those Zebras! The room lined with award discs and posters which is a fan fest is shown here.  Thanks to our realtor correspondent Mark Maddock.

Right To The Top

February 1, 2019

David Coverdale is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Slide It In with a slew of editions to suit everyone. Rhino are issuing a 6CD version which bulks out the original 1984 UK and US mixes with “unreleased live and studio recordings, music videos, concert footage, and a new interview with founder and lead singer, David Coverdale…” and a book. So you get remixes and alternate versions of every track.
This is entitled The Ultimate Special Edition. If that’s a stretch, then Rhino will also put out a 2LP / 2CD with both mixes, and a single CD of the US mix.
I’ve already bought the record about eight times (including that lovely original Japanese vinyl edition – see below) so might hang fire as the last CD edition from 2009 was more than enough for these ears. I generally only bother with the U.S. mixes anyway. But the hard core can start saving as it comes

.Whitesnake+Slide+It+In Japan.jpg

And it pips anything Deep Purple did to mark their 50th!
Thanks to John Tucker for the heads up.

Phenomena trilogy

January 17, 2019

UPDATE : John Tucker tells me the new CDs slack all the bonus tracks which turned up on previous editions, not sure why! UPDATE 2 : apparently there is a dispute over ownership.

The first three Phenomena albums, the brainchild of Tom Galley, have been reissued, I think this is the third time they’ve been re-released. But if you haven’t picked them up before, then now’s your chance. The first one features Glenn Hughes of course, alongside Cozy Powell, Mel Galley, Neil Murray, Don Airey and Ted McKenna, who all have mostly lengthy connections to the Purple family tree (Ted worked with Ian Gillan on his solo project). Glenn also turns up on Phenomena 2 but had jumped ship for the third disc. There are new sleeve notes and a remaster for all three discs. The press release does not give a label, but the music is now on iTunes.
CD suppliers? We tend to recommend https://www.keymailrecords.com these days, as they play fair with suppliers and everyone and can order most titles.

Date updates

November 29, 2018

More concerts shaping up for 2019; one or two we have touched on before but this brings us up to date! All these are logged on our 2019 tour date page on the site.

Rock meets Classic 2019.jpg

The concerts include a lengthy tour by tribute outfit Purpendicular with Ian Paice manning the drum kit, lasting through much of February and March in Europe. Still nothing for the UK! Deep Purple by the way found a number of dates on their Mexican tour previously announced cancelled at the last minute. Donald Trump probably expected them to move up and invade America by the back door…
Ian Gillan is also filling in the break in Deep Purple touring (which as we noted before seems to have been scaled back this last couple of years) with a dozen or more shows under the Rock Meets Classic Tour heading (now in the tenth year), again all in Europe. Well all in Germany except one!
The continuation of the Glenn Hughes Does DP tour (inspired by Debbie Does Dallas?) is also booking up with the second leg of the UK during May, but also a couple of showcase gigs in New York in April and then in Germany in September. It has been suggested that Glenn tried to use the current Deep Purple typeface logo on his publicity but was told to stop, so his name is in this style instead!
Meanwhile David Coverdale gets the chance to road test his all-new titanium knee joints (we’re all getting to that age it seems) across America in April / May 2019 with whoever is in Whitesnake this week, before eight shows in Europe, of which the only one in the UK is the Download Donington festival in June.
Then last up is another batch of shows from Don Airey and Friends through March.  I had heard that Roger Glover might be planning some shows as well but no news on that just yet.
A huge thank you to our special tour manager Lutz Reinart for bringing us up to speed as usual! Lutz was also a big help on the German edition of the Deep Purple In Rock history which is finally out.
