Limited edition of 20,000…

deep purple live in Rome 2013.jpg

Deep Purple started their official live archive series from the Steve Morse reunion era earlier this year. These will be sold as limited numbered CDs, coloured vinyl and digital downloads. The second release is a show from Rome (that’s in Italy, the press info helpfully points out) July 22 2013.
The first, “an explosive show from Australia”, was so explosive we missed it altogether (Simon was “otherwise engaged” at the time). Tim Summers tells us it was from Newcastle, Australia, March 14 2001, copied from the soundboard series box set (remastered, it doesn’t say how), so most collectors will already have this.
Anyway track listing for the Rome 2CD set is:

CD1 Intro / Fireball / Into The Fire / Hard Lovin’ Man / Vincent Price / Strange Kind Of Woman / Contact Lost / Guitar Solo / All The Time In The World / The Well-Dressed Guitar / The Mule / Bodyline / Lazy
CD 2 Above And Beyond / No One Came / Key Solo / Perfect Strangers / Space Truckin’ / Smoke On The Water / Hush / Bass Solo / Black Night

A chance to check out live versions of three not often heard songs and get in on the ground floor of this series. It’s out at the end of the week via earMusic. Some of the cuts have already been out on the Now What live tapes edition, but this is the full set.
They’re pressing 20,000 on CD so no need to panic buy. Indeed it’s hard to see what is limited about such a long run. The label have borrowed (closely, but without any sense of adventure) packaging ideas from Pearl Jam who have been doing this sort of limited release since 2000 (much to Steve Grover’s delight! An example is below). Basic cover info and tatty bootleg style graphics (FYI edel design dept: NEVER EVER compress the typewriter font, it always looks awful).
It’s hard to know the rationale behind the series, i.e. what dictates a set will end up in this collection, or will ALL live shows from now on get this treatment? Will they go for rarer graded shows which might not be soundboard quality but would interest fans?
Still at least they’ve half tried, even if it has taken them 30 years or so! Thanks to Stuart Hamilton for the news; Edel’s people couldn’t be bothered to even email over the press release.

Deep-Purple-Roundhouse-2013.jpg

Another poster sent in by Gary Poronovich for us to check out, from Deep Purple’s two nights at The Roundhouse October 16th and 17th 2013. It’s a real shame they haven’t got a good logo as it kind of spoils what could have been a smart design.  The Roundhouse logo by comparison is excellent. I wonder if these will be as collectable in the future as 1970s posters are today? One things for sure I won’t be around to see!

Deep Purple Wacken 2013 and Tokyo 2014 live albums

Two upcoming live releases from Deep Purple have been announced, documenting the Now What tour in some depth… and an extra dimension! They are issuing shows from 2013 and 2014 as two separate but sort of matching titles, recorded in Germany and Tokyo.  Release was announced a while back but we wanted to try and get more detail together rather than just reprint the press release…

The German show is from the Wacken festival, August 1st 2013 and titled “From the Setting Sun…”.  The Tokyo show was recorded at the Budokan on April 12th 2014 nearly a year later, and is released as “…To The Rising Sun.”
Format wise the confusing record label information is a little hard to decipher, but it seems both shows will be released in one of four editions: 2CD + DVD set, triple vinyl, stand alone DVD or Blu Ray. There are no CD only formats. The Tokyo Blu Ray is a regular 2D format but for Wacken you can watch Ian Gillan’s bare feet in glorious 3D-o-vision!  I must confess our new TV set has 3D but we’ve never even opened the glasses, and assume the disc has a 2D option. All formats are due to ship at the very end of August (which likely means early September.)
Set-lists have not been supplied, but from our archives we can suggest these (see below) although I cannot guarantee all the tracks will be on the final releases. And as you might have guessed, despite being almost a year apart, the sets are very similar in terms of songs played, which is presumably why the label has felt the need to stress the very different atmosphere at the two venues. You’d think someone would have thought about adding in a few different songs when they knew they were being filmed again. Let’s hope that the cover photos for the two titles are from the same show, otherwise Steve must have been wearing that top for eight months! Uli Jon Roth guested on Smoke on the Wacken show but isn’t mentioned in the press info.
They’re available to pre-order at the DTB online shop, and we will email confirmed prices once the label has bothered to send them out. The primary format is obviously film, and you can only get the audio CD with the DVD edition. If this follows previous releases, these special formats, especially the triple vinyl, are likely to be quite limited.  Thanks to Bo Olsson, Tim Summers for their help.

Set-list : Highway Star (Wacken)  or Apres Vous (Tokyo) / Into the Fire / Hard Lovin’ Man / Vincent Price / Strange Kind of Woman (‘SKOW’ before ‘VP’ at Tokyo) / Contact Lost / Uncommon Man (Tokyo)/ The Well-Dressed Guitar / The Mule (Tokyo) / Hell to Pay / Lazy / Above and Beyond / No One Came / Perfect Strangers / Space Truckin’ / Smoke on the Water – Encore: Green Onions / Hush / Black Night

Two more live tracks from Now What appeared on the band’s last live CD, which accompanied a special edition of the studio album in late 2013. They were from four shows in July and August 2013, cherry picked to form a full show.  This set is also in stock at DTB online shop, in a rather smart gold foil diecut sleeve.

This item was updated with more reliable set list info July 21.

Some great shots of the current band in action in Montreux last year in a little gallery on the site… courtesy of Ueli Frey.  He turned up for the show with a book of his earlier images, and Bruce liked the stuff so much he gave him an all areas pass to snap the entire show.  I particularly like this shot of Roger, with a creative use of the mono background.

UK Dates At Last

March 5, 2013

Four confirmed British shows have at last been announced for October. No sign of the Opera House which IG was going on about, but instead a real surprise show at The Roundhouse in London. This was the venue where the band played their first ever British show back in 1968 so we can’t believe it isn’t a deliberate nod to history (even if IP is the only one from the current band who was there). Tickets on sale Thursday this week (promoter is LiveNation), but may be available on Wed to O2 customers (don’t ask me how this works, I don’t have a mobile – if it’s not queuing outside the ticket office for four hours I’m not interested!). No support info yet (Frampton is doing the honours for the German dates which follow). My thanks to our watcher of the skies Tim Summers. Dates are:

October 12 Manc Apollo
October 13 SECC Clyde Auditorium Glasgow
October 15 NIA Birmingham
October 16 Roundhouse London

Full 2013 date list on the DTB pages here.

…stood on a mountain top

March 1, 2013

A wedge of German dates have been announced for October, and also a concert in a ski lodge at the top of a mountain in Austria! Thanks to Jochen Karger for the update, the shows are added to our gig list on the site.
