Six-pack Whitesnake

August 27, 2019

The previous immersive Whitesnake sets must have worked out as DC has authorised another six pack special, this time for 1989’s Slip Of The Tongue album.  I must confess it’s not an album I remember playing much, it didn’t really live up to the 1987 one in terms of sheer wallop for me, but the singles mostly went US top thirty and it reached number ten in the US album charts, no mean feat at the time (it went platinum the following year).

Anyway as before, the album is remastered again, plus extras which include demos, monitor mixes, a Phil Easton promo interview disc, extended 12″ versions, b-sides, a whole CD of bits and bobs taken off the multi-tracks, a live set from Castle Donington 1990 (that’s the touring line-up below) and a DVD round up of the promo videos. So if this is your cup of tea then full marks indeed.  The Americans are even offering a special version with a signed lithograph.

Right that’s the news in brief, here’s the full monty American press details from Rhino, courtesy Tom Dixon, who is buying it he says!  I won’t insult anyone by showing their press pack photo as it’s so obviously faked up the North Koreans will be offering them a job.  Deep breath…..

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on October 4 for $74.98. The 6CD/DVD collection includes a newly remastered version of the album, plus unreleased studio recordings, audio and video of the band’s performance at the 1990 Monsters of Rock festival, and a new interview with Whitesnake founder and lead singer, David Coverdale. It comes in a 60-page hardbound book filled with rare memorabilia from the era.  For a limited time Rhino will offer the Super Deluxe edition paired with a lithograph signed by David Coverdale for $84.98.

Other versions of Slip of the Tongue will also be available the same day, including double-CD Deluxe Edition, which includes the newly remastered album expanded with a selection of rare and unreleased bonus tracks ($24.98) and a double-LP Deluxe Edition, which features the newly remastered album along with a selection of unique bonus tracks ($31.98).  A single-disc version ($9.98) includes the newly remastered album, along with single B-Sides plus alternate recordings. The music will be available digitally as well.

Following the 8x platinum success of their eponymous album in 1987, Whitesnake returned two years later with Slip of the Tongue. At the time, the band included Coverdale, bassist Rudy Sarzo, drummer Tommy Aldridge, and guitarists Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Vai. Vandenberg and Coverdale co-wrote all but one song on the album, but Vandenberg couldn’t record them in the studio at the time due to a hand injury. To fill the void, Vai joined the band for the album and tour.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION features unreleased versions of every album track, as well as monitor mixes for the album recorded in 1989. In addition, the collection includes nearly two dozen previously unreleased tracks taken from the session tapes that highlight working versions of album tracks and more. The set also includes the CD debut of Slip of the Tongue: The Wagging Tongue Edition. Released exclusively on vinyl in 1989, it features Coverdale being interviewed about each track followed by the song.

SLIP OF THE TONGUE: 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION finishes big with Whitesnake’s 1990 headlining performance at the Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington on CD and DVD. The DVD also includes three music videos, all of which have been carefully restored and remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound for the first time ever. A new promo video for the track “Sweet Lady Luck”, made exclusively for this set, a behind the scenes look at the making of the album, plus a newly recorded interview with Coverdale and Vandenberg rounds out the DVD.

Once Upon A Time on vinyl

Deep Purple Dating Game

Plenty of hype surrounding Quentin Tarantino’s new film Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, and this story set in Sixties America features plenty of era defining rock tracks, so it’s nice to see Deep Purple get two cuts on the accompanying soundtrack album, namely Hush and Kentucky Woman. I assume they figure in the film at some point but will have to wait and see (yes I will be going, I have all the original Once Upon A Time movies so be good to see if this matches up, and while his films sometimes fall short for me usually they are very watchable). Stills from the film seem to draw heavily on vintage US TV shows not unlike the one above!  Apparently Tarantino ‘curated’ the choice of the soundtrack music himself too. Hush is easily Purple’s most soundtrack featured song by a long way, kicking off the Children of Men soundtrack album in 2006 to great effect. Even the band’s remake of the track from 1988 made it to It’s A Boy Girl Thing the same year (rubbing shoulders with The Sugababes!). Hush also turned up in the football film The Damned United three years later. There are more which escape me for the moment. It’s just a shame Tarantino didn’t look a bit further for the poster art which misses those great efforts by Tom Chantrell by more than a whisper. Anyway, several colour vinyl limited editions planned if you collect that sort of thing, plus a CD set. Thanks to Mark Jones and many more for the extra info.

Vox : IG

gillan at the microphone.jpg

It looks as if Deep Purple’s new studio album (which rather neatly will be their 21st, it just seems more!) is being planned for 2020. As we reported earlier (Back In The USA) the recording work from the group was completed in Nashville and it looks as if IG (above doing his thing for Rock Aid) laid down his vocals in early June. The next stage will be the the mixing.  I guess they could have got it sorted for release later this year but that would then clash with their touring for the latter part of 2019 which is already booked and could confuse promotion. Keeping it under wraps until 2020 gives plenty of time to prepare everything for a proper launch, teaser videos and all the usual gubbins that seem to go with a major album these days, and hopefully some shows with new material, etc.  And of course flying the band out to exotic frozen locations and planning those ice-breaker type shots takes time!

By the way, I read the other day that to earn an average UK wage a musician needs to get 32 million downloads in a year.  So all us old gits who stick to buying physical media can at least know we’re doing our bit to lower that lousy average.  Also we should have said happy anniversary to Steve Morse, who passed his 25th anniversary of being a member of Deep Purple recently.  I was hammering through Abandon the other day to privately mark Jon’s passing (the neighbours might disagree about privately) and marvelling at Steve’s contributions at the same time.  That’s a hell of a stint.

New and old

May 24, 2019

Glenn Hughes’s promoters have been swift to reorganise his cancelled UK tour, with some dates rescheduled, and some alternatives where venues were not available.  Dates are on the 2019 concert diary page.  Thanks to Tim Summers.

Glenn delays

May 14, 2019

Glenn Hughes has delayed the second leg of his “Plays Deep Purple” British tour due to begin on May 14th (tonight) as he needs medical treatment, but a statement from his website says that while this is urgent he should be back on the road again before very long, and the tour will be rescheduled.  Anyone with tickets will probably be contacted by their agency.  The latest is that some of the shows will be rescheduled for November, but some have had to be pulled as the venues are not available then. Best wishes from everyone here to Glenn for a speedy recovery.

It’s strange, as I was only watching a home made video of some amateur slides from the first show I ever saw him at in Sheffield back in 1974 just yesterday!  A guy has found some old slides  (I only took black and white myself, colour film was too expensive back then!) he took from what we would now call the mosh pit, so they’re a bit blurred but full of atmosphere and brought the excitement of that night right back to me for one.  I was a rabid Mk 2 fan but those shows were blistering. Thanks to Mark Maddock for flagging this up for me and to Tim Summer for tour info.

Deep Purple rehearsal February 2019.png

Deep Purple are currently hunkered down in Nashville working on their next studio album, using the same set-up as for Infinite (released in April 2017).  The band had a pre-recording writing session in a big studio in Germany in February (see photo above; no idea what they used the cherry picker for!)).  It’s early days yet but given how rapidly things are moving, and with more shows being lined up for the later part of 2019 (see below) one suspects an Autumn release might well be on the cards. Like the writing session they are keeping the recordings top secret, so here’s a photo of a local bus instead.

More shows?  They have just announced a decent tour of America starting in September and running right through to the third week of October.  This has to be one of the bands biggest tours there for a long time, some thirty-three dates listed so far.  No wonder they’ve been taking it easy for much of the year.

Thanks to Tim Summers, Lutz Reinert and others for the details.  Full dates are on our diary page.  This includes the European shows in December.

Concerto Five O

April 23, 2019

You see, a nice poster design says it all, no need to add anything. Well done whoever designed this and carefully referenced the original typography and colouring.Concerto_50th anniversary.jpgTickets are on sale now, goodness knows what a plane ticket to Quebec costs but it must be tempting. Thanks to Nicholas Houle, programme co-ordinator.

Christmas markets

March 27, 2019

The dates we mentioned the other day are firming up. Here are the shows confirmed so far (and one of the flyers) if anyone fancies a family visit to a pre-Christmas market (“oh look, Deep Purple are playing in town love, what a coincidence…”). Thanks to Tim Summers for the info, complete with links to stories announcing the dates if you need more detail. I’ll add the venues etc. to our diary shortly. Tickets go on sale this Friday. I assume they will be doing more in 2020 as it’s likely the new studio album will be out by then.  They begin recording in America later this year.

The bus now waiting

March 26, 2019

Deep Purple are having a bit of a break from hurtling this year but have booked in some shows in Eastern Europe for December 2019. Sofia, Budapest, Klagenfurt and Ostrava (on the 4th) so far with more to follow.  Thanks to Tim Summers for the heads up.  Sorry, am I allowed to even write the word Europe any more?

Record Store Day 2019

March 25, 2019

A bit of an uninspiring selection on the Deep Purple front again this year for Record Store Day it has to be said, with only three offerings appearing on April 13th.  Demon are doing Gillan’s Mr. Universe, the pretext being to mark the 40th Anniversary of the album (which just makes us all feel old!).  Collectability is boosted by “split coloured vinyl” (rather than split kneee loons) which sort of looks quite neat. But whether it’s enough to tempt people is debatable.  The Demon web site does not show how many are being made.

Friday Music are shoving out their rather lacklustre Tommy Bolin CD sampler Come Taste The Man on vinyl in a run of 1,000 copies, this is for the US but shops here seem to be listing it.

Lastly there’s a 2LP release of Butterfly Ball, with the original album plus the demos and such which appeared on the CD reissue and I don’t think have been on vinyl before.

You can check out all special releases on the Record Store days website

https://recordstoreday.co.uk/releases/rsd-2019/

Thanks to Mark Maddock for his help.

Here’s a snap of the Gillan disc.
