Details of the photo shoot for Infinite are emerging, which took place in December 2016 in Hamburg. Yes it’s a port city, but there is a big long estuary where they must have set up (we used to love this part of the journey when we travelled in on the ferry back in the 80s, usually for Purple gigs in Germany funnily enough! Sadly the ferry no longer goes into the port.) Roger Glover has been explaining (to Billboard magazine) that the entire package and concept came from the record label rather than the band.

“It was the record company’s idea, the title and the concept. It’s always great when they come up with the idea, and I think we were all very happy that someone else was making the decisions for us. They sent us a mockup of what they were looking for, and it looked great. They said, ‘Be prepared to have a bit of fun. We’ve got some vintage Arctic clothing,’ so it was a real surprise. It looked great, although God knows how those explorers years ago survived — obviously, some of them didn’t — because [the clothes] are not that warm compared to the modern ski clothing of today.”

They have now issued a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot alongside the single track Time for Bedlam (in Billboard jargon a “focus track”! Thanks to Tim Summers.

The interview also sheds a bit of light on the Long Farewell concept which is worth reading:

“No one wants to stop,” says Glover. “But we know that I’m 71 now, [singer Ian] Gillan is 71, we’re all about late 60s, early 70s, and bodies have a way of not keeping up with your brain or your career. We’re all sort of approaching that point where I can’t imagine another eight years to do an album. The time is approaching when it will end, but we don’t want to face that. We don’t actually want to make a date or a final tour or anything. We just want to carry on as long as nature allows or is kind of dignified. If we can’t do what we do anymore, then yes, it’s time to stop. But we’re still doing it, and we’re still enjoying it very much. So all we’re saying is the door is closing, but it’s not closed yet.”

Blackmore with Purple

Deep Purple and Jurgen Blackmore, Hamburg 2010

This interesting photo has been kicking about in my in-tray for a while, and shows Deep Purple guesting with Blackmore on the 2010 tour. That’s Jurgen Blackmore of course! We think it was taken in Hamburg on November 27 during a run through of Smoke On The Water. JB was playing with Over The Rainbow at the time. I checked out a couple of the wobbly audience videos which are kicking about but sadly (apart from them inducing motion sickness) JB takes the super fast route through the solo rather than ease off the gas a bit like his dad. Still you can see where this could potentially lead…
I’ve lost the photo credit for this, please email if you sent it in and I will correct.
