Reverse tributes

April 24, 2015

Hot on the heels of Coverdale’s Purple Album, and Blackmore’s rumoured Purple Rainbows, comes news of a sort of reverse tribute offering, from the Deep Purple covers band Purpendicular.
They’ve gone in the other direction, and ditched their covers in favour of an album of all new material BUT with contributions from Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey, Steve Morse and Neil Murray!
It’s a concept album entitled This Is The Thing #1 and available through through their own website.
Nick Simper has also gone the same way and cut a new album with Nasty Habits, the band he did the successful Mk 1 tribute shows with for some time. This time he’s doing all new material, contemporary rock.  The CD is titled De La Frog Conspiracy (don’t ask us why!) and it’s available through the band. Email them at nasty.habits@chello.at

Marshall

November 27, 2014

Documentary looking at the history of Marshall on BBC4 TV Friday night at 10.00pm, which should be of interest to most Purple fans. As is all too often the case with the BBC these days I’ve not seen one trailer for the show (clearly Lucy Worsleblackmore marshall stacksy isn’t fronting it) which is squeezed in between a couple of programmes about Pink Floyd (it will be available on iPlayer soon after). Sadly Blackmore didn’t want to appear, and they couldn’t get Glover’s schedule to tie-in with filming dates but Nick Simper does hold the torch for the band.  Lot’s of other interesting guests in the one hour show, though sadly as it has been in the works for some years, not all have survived to see it transmitted (including Big Jim Sullivan).  The eagle eyed may well spot the name of Tonny Steenhagen in the credits, a regular contributor to all things Darker Than Blue, who helped the producers out.  Let’s hope they spell his name right…!

Fireworks

August 30, 2012

It’s sometime easy to forget that Classic Rock hasn’t got the newsracks all to themselves. The new issue of Fireworks magazine manages to get Blackmore, Gillan and Simper together in their latest issue. More details and cover on the DTB blog here. Talking of Blackmore, some interesting discussions on the man’s music sparked off in the comments section of the Rainbow book story.
